Date: 24/01/02 THE European Commission is granting €5 million in emergency aid for victims of the volcano that has devastated the Congolese town of Goma. The Union's executive based the decision on a 'first needs assessment' conducted by four officials from the Commission's humanitarian office ECHO. They dashed to the region less than 24 hours after Nyiragongo - a volcanic mountain on the shore of Lake Kivu - erupted. The assistance will be focused on providing clean water, food, medicine and plastic blankets for people left homeless by the disaster. |
