Book abstract: This book has three aims. First, it provides an insight to the evolution of EU crisis management systems, civilian and military. The book includes coverage of the security challenge that has been posed since the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11th. Second, the book examines the development of crisis management and conflict prevention aspects of the EU's external relations including institutional adaptations that have been made to accommodate the EU's growing responsibilities. Third, the book examines how much progress has been made and what remains to be done in EU crisis management. The book is divided into eight chapters: The Gestation of European Security and Defence; Visions of Autonomy - From St Malo to Helsinki; The EU's Technicolour Dream Coat - Pinstripe, Khaki and Blue; From Nice to Laeken; The Institutional Structures of EU External Relations; Developing the Civilian Aspects of Crisis Management, Conflict Prevention and Civil Protection; Public Support for EU External Relations; Three Challenges for Crisis Management. The book relies heavily on official documentation including that of the EU Presidencies and aims to offer a clear and accessible overview of a complex and rapidly changing area of EU activity. The book is aimed at academic audiences and practitioners. |
