The Austrian leader, Wolfgang Schüssel, has tried to play down the significance of a petition against the Czech Temelin nuclear plant organised by the far-right Freedom Party. Nine-hundred thousand people - nearly a sixth of Austrian voters - signed the petition, demanding that Czech membership of the European Union should be vetoed until the plant is closed. |
