The gap between research spending in the US and the EU is widening. If the Union is to reach its goal of becoming the world's most competitive, knowledge-based economy by 2010, the trend must be reversed. Creating a European research area - the centrepiece of the new sixth research framework programme to be formally launched in November - can help achieve this. Here, innovation has an important role to play. |
