Press Release: Better environment for enterprises: concrete commitments to achieve the Lisbon objective

The European Commission adopted a Communication on 14 November entitled a 'Better Environment for Enterprises' which will be presented to the Competitiveness Council on 26 November 2002. The Communication launches a new instrument in enterprise policy quantitative targets. It contains a first set of 70 national targets, put forward by the Member States, matching several business issues. Member States have committed themselves to achieving these. By improving policy monitoring and facilitating policy discussion, such targets will help the EU move nearer to achieving the objective of the European Council of Lisbon, to make Europe the world's most dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010. They give a clear signal to European businesses that concrete commitments are in place to improve the business environment.
