WIND-power technology worth €5.8 billion was installed in the EU in 2002, increasing its capacity to 23,000 megawatts - a 33 rise on the previous year - according to new figures released by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).

Germany accounted for 55 of the installed capacity, enough to supply 4.7 of national electricity needs, and Spain increased its capacity by 45.

EWEA called for additional political backing "beyond Germany, Spain and Denmark, which account for 89 of the 2002 market" and predicted the global wind-power market "could be worth €25 billion a year by 2010".
