This extensive yearbook on candidate countries should serve as a working tool for all interested in the enlargement process. Covering the years 1997 to 2001, the Yearbook contains detailed tables on demography, education, research and development, social conditions and labour force, national accounts and finance, agriculture, energy, industry and construction, retail and tourism, transport, telecommunications and information society, as well as external trade and environment. The Yearbook contains most of the structural indicators that were adopted by the European Council to monitor the Lisbon competitiveness strategy. These indicators were integrated into the respective thematic chapters of the Yearbook and are highlighted by a specific logo.
