Book abstract: This new handbook provides a detailed and insightful analysis of the prospects for the enlarged European Union, drawing on its extensive databases to present a wealth of comparable socio-economic lifestyle statistics on the twenty-five countries entering into membership on 1 May 2004, and the three further countries awaiting membership in the next round of accession. Analysis is focused on the impact of enlargement on the 8 CEEC countries granted accession in 2004 and the two aiming to join in 2007. The size of Cyprus and Malta and their current level of development means that the impact of their accession will be negligible, and the EU has yet to open accession negotiations with Turkey. A written overview provides an introduction to the statistical tables, which cover 22 subject areas, including Population; Economic Indicators; External Trade; Industry; Consumer Expenditure; Advertising, Media and Leisure; Health; Crime; Literacy and Education; Communications; Transport, Travel and Tourism. The time span covered by many of the statistical tables permits the analysis of socio-economic trends as a basis for forecasting. The work will interest all those engaged in business within the EU seeking to supplement marketing knowledge of the enlarged EU. |
