There has been wide protest from MEPs over the contents of a report commissioned by European Commission President Romano Prodi and released in July 2003. The report was drafted by eight academics under the leadership of André Sapir, a Brussels-based economics professor and adviser to Mr Prodi. Their brief was to set out proposals that would help the European Union become the 'most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy' while enlarging from 15 to 25 Member States. There are no firm plans to put the proposals into practice. |
