Commission cabinets: second time around …

CONTROVERSIES over the composition of José Manuel Barroso's European Commission delayed the appointment of officials to the commissioners' private offices.

But Parliament's vote last Thursday to approve the revised EU executive cleared the way for commissioners to complete their administrative teams. In comparison with the draft list of cabinet members which we published on 28 October the significant changes now are the addition of the names of those recruited by Franco Frattini, the new Italian commissioner, and Andris Piebalgs, the new Latvian commissioner, and the appointments to the cabinet of José Manuel Barroso.

Each commissioner has a spokesperson, who must be of a different nationality. The spokespersons are not members of the cabinets but are answerable to the Commission spokeswoman, Françoise Le Bail.
