After terrorist train bombings in Madrid on 11 March 2004, French frontier police were put on heightened alert along the Franco-Spanish border in the Basque country. It is suspected that the Basque separatist organisation ETA is responsible for the atrocities, and South-west France has long been used by ETA as a strategic base. |
