Surprise victory for Basescu in Romania

Traian Basescu, leader of the Justice and Truth Party, won a surprise victory in Romania's Presidential Election on 12 December 2004. Mr Basescu took 51.2% of the vote, beating Adrian Nastase, the incumbent Prime Minister, who had been widely expected to win.
