Public health associations have lost their battle to force electronics manufacturers to phase out the use of a flame retardant, decaBDE, after the European Commission backed its use.

Following risk assessments which concluded that the retardant was safe for use, the Commission last week (15 October) exempted decaBDE from an EU law on the use of hazardous substances.

The brominated flame retardant industry panel welcomed the move.

But Mecki Naschke from the European Environmental Bureau pointed out that the Commission's scientific committee SCHER said that emissions of decaBDE into the environment could lead to "serious problems in the future".

Following risk assessments which concluded that the retardant was safe for use, the European Commission on 15 October 2005 exempted the contested flame retardant decaBDE from an EU law on the use of hazardous substances.
