The European Commission has called for more a detailed study into plans to make it easier for workers to transfer supplementary pensions across EU borders

The decision to refer the issue to a new working party, which is examining obstacles to the free movement of workers, came in the face of opposition to the idea in some EU countries led by Germany.

Commission President Jacques Santer said more data was needed before drawing up proposals in such a sensitive area.
