Date: 03/04/1997 The Pope did not attend the treaty celebrations but, when in Rome, the pontiff is never far away - and he cropped up at the press conference given by European Parliament President José María Gil-Robles after the IGC meeting. When a reporter asked: “Do you think the Pope could imbue a greater element of spirituality into the Union as we are here in Rome?”, Gil-Robles was unfazed. “I think the spirituality of the EU can be contributed to by all those who can pass on to European citizens a standard of living that will allow them to reach a greater spiritual plane,” he said, adding : “One of those who can contribute is the Pope. Another is the patriarch of Constantinople.” |
