Date: 05/03/1998 Despite the fact that it has just moved into a building constructed almost entirely out of glass, it seems the European Parliament is not as transparent as its honourable members would like us to believe. Entre Nous discovered this week that when it comes to the sensitive question of MEPs' extra-curricular interests, the normally 'see-through' institution suddenly becomes decidedly opaque. It transpires that while curious observers are allowed to glance at the Parliament's register of interests (which some unkind critics have described as a list outlining which member is paid by whom to do what), they are absolutely forbidden to photograph or photocopy the files. This rule - totally by coincidence, of course - makes it extremely hard to study the register in any real detail. |
