Date: 05/03/1998 The seemingly endless discussions surrounding the setting up of the EU's new foreign policy planning unit have spawned another term to be added to the ever-expanding dictionary of Euro-speak. It appears that EU ambassadors have taken to referring to the talks as Schtroumpfery. The word is a pun on the name of Council of Ministers Secretary-General Jurgen Trumpf combined with a reference to the small blue cartoon characters known in France as Les Schtroumpfs and in the anglophone world as the Smurfs. What Trumpf himself thinks of this particular development is not known. |
