Date: 05/03/1998 Entre Nous readers could be forgiven for thinking that any film about life in the Commission is unlikely to be a box-office hit. However, it appears that one such movie is in the running for a major international prize. The Commissioner, starring actor John Hurt (famous for his roles in Alien and The Elephant Man among others) and based on a novel by former MEP and senior European Commission official Stanley Johnson, has been nominated for a Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival. The movie traces the life of a British minister who is 'exiled' to Brussels after falling from grace at home and subsequently has his house blown up after annoying a large German gentleman with the initials HK. Apparently, Chancellor Helmut Kohl did not attend the film's premiere. |
