Date: 18/09/1997 The Commission's September opinion poll comes to the interesting conclusion that support for the idea of holding national referenda fell from 63&percent; to 56&percent; following the June Amsterdam summit. The accompanying europopinion comment suggests that this is an indication that people are generally satisfied with the agreement on a new EU treaty reached at the meeting. But might it not be instead that the change reflects the fact that the summit was a damp squib, with few far-reaching decisions that would merit going to the polls? |
