The anointing of Gerhard Schroeder as the Social Democratic Party’s candidate for the German chancellorship has changed the EU’s political landscape overnight

With Schroeder as the SDP's candidate for the September general election, the polls suggest the party has its best chance of unseating Helmut Kohl since he first took office in 1982. An SPD policy paper released this week pledged to bring an end to the gridlock on tax and labour reform which has dogged Germany since the last election.
