Date: 02/10/1997 Sweden and Germany have further consolidated their hold on the upper echelons of the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe. While Swede Daniel Tarschys is the institution's secretary-general, the president of its parliamentary assembly is German Christian Democrat Leni Fischer. Tarschys' new number two from this week - the highly respected Christian Krüger, who has been secretary of the European Commission of Human Rights for over 20 years - illustrates the perfect marriage of the two nationalities. He is German and his wife Benedicta is Swedish. |
