As the summer holidays begin to fade into distant memory, spare a thought for the hundreds of cats and dogs fed and watered by tourists on Greek holiday isles.

Danish Socialist MEP Freddy Blak says many of them are left to fend for themselves when the tourists head home from their rented villas.

Abandoned pets found by the authorities on the island of Crete are fed a particularly nasty poison which leads to a horrible death, points out Blak, who wants to know what the Commission is going to do about it.

Unfortunately for the Greek strays, Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler says that the responsibility lies with member states and that the institution has no plans to legislate on euthanasia for pets.
