Lifelong campaigner for peace in Northern Ireland and Irish Socialist MEP John Hume has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Hume, leader of Northern Ireland's predominantly Catholic Social Democratic and Labour Party, shares the award with Protestant David Trimble, who heads the Ulster Unionist Party.

Hume has earned the accolade for breathing new life into the Northern Ireland peace process when, a decade ago, he took the gamble of talking to Sinn Fein, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Those first steps ultimately led to the signing of the Good Friday peace agreement in Northern Ireland in April this year.
