Date: 21/05/1998 this week rejected calls for a study into the consequences of abolishing duty-free sales within the Union, leaving little hope of a reprieve for campaigners fighting against the move. Ireland argued for a study into the planned end of duty free in July 1999, saying that thousands of transport jobs would be at risk. It won support from Germany and France, but a majority of member states opposed the idea. “That's the end of the discussion,” a European Commission official said after the meeting. |
