Date: 21/05/1998 Von Wogau had what might have been a rather chilling foretaste of his own political future last week. The chairman of Parliament's economic and monetary committee was given the job of speaking to the Strasbourg chamber after it had approved the nomination of Duisenberg and his five colleagues to the executive board of the ECB. At one point, his speech praising his Chancellor Helmut Kohl to the hilt for rescuing the Brussels summit from the bungling of the British presidency hit a crescendo. He paused. Then, turning to his Christian Democratic colleagues, he demanded: “Applause! Applause!” But none came. |
