Date: 18/06/1998 Attempts by Günter Burghardt, head of the European Commission's Directorate-General for external relations (DGIA), to suck up to his boss proved an embarrassing failure recently. On hearing the news that Foreign Affairs Commissioner Hans van den Broek's daughter was soon to marry a Dutch prince, Burghardt and his wife Rita sent a cringeworthy note to all DGIA staff. “We will attend the service and congratulate the young couple on behalf of DGIA. We will also choose a present on behalf of Mr Van Den Broek's services. If you would like to participate, please sign the card and enclose your contribution in the envelope,” read the memo. Entre Nous is reliably informed that the response to his idea was decidedly underwhelming. |
