Date: 21/05/1998 Giorgos Katiforis wins this week's Entre Nous 'telling-it-like-it-is' award. The Greek Socialist MEP, who stood in occasionally for his German Christian Democrat colleague Karl von Wogau during the ECB hearings, opened the questioning of Italian candidate Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa on day two of the inquiry. “Yesterday,” he began, “we heard a brilliant bombardment of platitudes from you central bankers. I was just wondering whether you would be less platitudinous with us today.” Padoa-Schioppa gets second prize for his response. “Better a platitude than a bêtise,” he quipped. These boys will go far. |
