Date: 26/11/1998 ...by a large majority in favour of relaxing the Union's 30-month old ban on UK beef exports, clearing the way for British beef to return to EU supermarket shelves early next year. However, only deboned beef from animals born after August 1996 will be eligible for export. Only Germany voted against repealing the embargo, although France, Spain, Austria and Luxembourg abstained. British Farm Minister Nick Brown said afterwards that the challenge for the UK now was to “rebuild” its exports. But in a telephone survey conducted by a German television station the day after the vote, 87&percent; of callers said they would boycott British beef. |
