Biotechnology. The Commission has launched 154 research projects in biotechnology. These are the latest projects funded by the Biotechnology Programme as part of the Fourth Framework Programme. Funding amounts to € 138m. Topics include the development of new vaccines and therapeutic drugs and the optimisation of bioprocesses ensuring food safety or environment restoration.

Separately, the Commission has launched a new initiative called the European Plant Biotechnology Network (EPBN), in order to promote networking and the exploitation and dissemination of results from the currently running pan-European research projects in this sector.
