Date: 21/01/1999 Two hundred and thirty-two Euro MPs voted to censure the European Commission last week which, by completely irrelevant coincidence, is exactly the number of procedures which went smoothly out of 240 items on a European Central Bank checklist for the single currency launch. There were “only eight minor incidents”, according to Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, a member of the ECB's executive board. However, the launch weekend did have its downside. “We have not tested our ability to take contingency measures,” said the Italian central banker during a recent trip to Brussels. Perhaps they better had. |
