Date: 06/05/1999 ...after the trade body's 134 members failed to agree on a new director-general. Following three emergency sessions this week, a majority of WTO members appeared to be supporting ex-New Zealand Prime Minister Mike Moore for the post, but Thai contender Supachai Panitchpakdi refused to stand down, preventing the organisation from reaching a consensus on the new head. Diplomats suggest the WTO might have to settle the issue by taking the unprecedented step of holding a vote, which could take up to a month to organise. Most EU countries have now declared their support for Moore. |
