But one existing MEP who may be barred from standing again is Anita Pollack, a UK Labour Party London member.

She appears to have fallen victim to last month's vote by the European Parliament to reform its internal rules.

The proposed members' statute states that only EU nationals can stand for the assembly.

The problem for Mrs Pollack is that she was born in Sydney and proudly refuses to give up her no-nonsense green Australian passport for a floppy burgundy-coloured British one.
