Date: 28/01/1999 to improve the environmental record of the Common Agricultural Policy as part of the Agenda 2000 reforms, in response to a request from EU leaders at last month's Vienna summit. A report issued jointly by Franz Fischler and Ritt Bjerregaard, the Commissioners for agriculture and the environment respectively, highlighted plans to make eligibility for some farm subsidies conditional on the observance of strict environmental criteria. Union agriculture and environment ministers will discuss the study later this year. |
