The European Parliament’s environment committee has voted to apply rules on waste incineration

to both hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Environment committee chairman Ken Collins said afterwards that he believed most EU governments would support the move. The rules, as amended by the Parliament, would ensure that limits on emissions on pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and heavy metals would apply to the burning of all types of waste. Industry groups have complained that the existing rules are too soft on factories which use waste as fuel. The report will be voted on by the full Parliament next week and discussed by EU environment ministers in June.
