“We stand by the decision made in 1991 that duty-free sales within EU countries will be abolished from 1 July,” she said this week as she left a meeting of the Danish parliament's tax committee. This was Jelved's most explicit comment on the issue since last week's Bonn summit, when most EU leaders gave their support to a German plan for a qualified 30-month reprieve for duty-free sales. Any stay of execution must be endorsed by all 15 finance ministers if it is to take effect. They will discuss the issue on 15 March.
