European labour law:

Originally published as a monograph in the International Encyclopaedia for Labour Law and Industrial Relations, this sixth revised edition contains a general introduction and two parts. Part I is devoted to individual labour law and Part II deals with collective labour law. In the general introduction, attention is paid to the institutional framework leading to European Community law. Here, the three European Treaties, European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) and the European Communities (EC), are examined, as well as the Institutions of the Community and other organs such as the European Social Fund. There follows discussion on the legislative process in the Communities and the relationship of the EC to other international organisations, especially the ILO, the EEA and the Europa Agreements concluded with some Central and Eastern European States. The general introduction also examines the genesis and development of European labour law with special attention being paid to the relationship between the economic and social aspects of Community affairs. Part I is devoted to individual labour law and discussion covers the free movement of workers, the equal treatment of men and women, the restructuring of enterprises in relation to collective redundancies, the transfer of enterprises and the insolvency of the employer, health and safety, the protection of motherhood and individual employment contracts. Part II on collective labour law looks at the possibilities for European-wide collective agreements, the proposals of the Commission regarding worker's participation in the public liability company and the Societas Europaea (SE), as well as the very important directive on European Works Councils and transnational information and consultation procedures. The book concludes with an epilogue, an annex, appendices, a short bibliography, an alphabetical list of cited cases from the European Court of Justice and an index.

Dr Roger Blanpain is a professor at the Faculties of Law of the Catholic Universities of Leuven (Belgium) and of Brabant, Tilburg (The Netherlands), where he teaches Belgian, European and Comparative Labour Law.
