The European Commission has approved a new code of conduct for its staff to follow when dealing with the public.

Under the legally-binding code, which will enter into force on 1 November, Commission officials will be expected to be courteous, objective and impartial. Staff will be obliged to reply to letters within 15 days of receiving correspondence. When answering the telephone, officials will be expected to identify themselves or their department and to return calls promptly.
