The importance of small businesses can never be overestimated. They are the backbone of the European economy, a source of jobs, new ideas and skills and make a valuable social contribution to local communities. For many years now, the European Commission has promoted specific policies to help create the right environment for these firms to thrive and
encourage others to take the same path. Now, it is updating its strategy by weaving the
various strands into a single coherent framework and by looking to integrate the ‘Think Small First’ principle into all EU and national policies.
