On the 16 November 2006, Ecuador, the world's largest banana exporter, filed a complaint against the 176 euro ($225; £119) per tonne duty for bananas from Latin America. It was the first complaint filed since the EU's new banana regime came into force on January 1 this year. Ecuador argued that the level of the duty makes it hard to compete with Caribbean and African producers. |
