Turkey’s EU hopes fade with Sarkozy / Turkey’s big hopes suffer big setback

Turkey’s government re­acted with coolness, 7 May 2007, to the election of Nicolas Sarkozy as President of France, aware that Ankara’s nearly five-decade-old ambition to join the European Union could founder during his term in office. Mr Sarkozy favours a special relationship between the EU and Turkey that falls short of full membership.
