Press Release: Is the commitment to sound public finances robust enough in Europe?

In its Communication of 27 June 2001 on the state of public finances in the Economic and Monetary Union in 2001 the European Commission reaffirms the view that public finances, if properly managed, can play a crucial role in stimulating growth and employment. The current economic slowdown should not be used as an excuse to compromise this ambition. Improved quality and sustainability of public finances should be pursued together with a renewed commitment to the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) quantitative objective of close to balance or in surplus.
