The Competitiveness Report 2001 published on 22 November 2001 by the European Commission suggests that despite an improving performance, the standards of living in the EU have fallen persistently behind those of the US in recent years. Moreover, Europe's presence in the important field of biotechnology is limited in comparison to the US. The report identifies underperformance in the field of innovation and a slower introduction of information and communication technologies as major factors behind the widening gap. However, the good performance of some Member States is a sign that EU's possibilities can be realised but not without a fundamental modernisation of its economic structures and innovation systems. |
