Will Britain and Ireland join Schengen?

The author argues that the retention of national frontier controls at Dover and Waterloo is not just a practical method of keeping out unwanted immigrants. It is also, or even mainly, a symbolic assertion of national sovereignty, and above all of independence from 'Brussels'.
