David Byrne, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, welcomed the European Parliament's endorsement of the revised Directive on General Product Safety on 4th October 2001. The new directive will make significant improvements to the rules for protecting consumer health and safety for non-food products. It will update, reinforce and complete the current rules which have been in place since 1992. The outcome of the conciliation with the Council of Ministers respects the main principles of the original Commission proposal of March 2000 and strikes a fair balance in sorting out the outstanding issues |
