The European Commission welcomed the prominent position of sustainable development issues at the Industry Council held in Brussels on 5 December 2001. Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström addressed the Industry Council for the first time, with the focus on two issues of key importance for the EU's contribution to sustainable development: the Commission's proposal for an EU wide emissions trading scheme (issued on 23 October) and follow-up to the White Paper on a new strategy for Chemicals issued in February (proposals in preparation). |
