The European Commission announced on 4 July 2001 the opening of nine new delegations and offices, many of them in South East Asia, a region of growing economic importance to the European Union. The plan, that is to be completed by the end of 2002, involves new delegations in Malaysia, Singapore, Laos and Saudi-Arabia, offices in Cambodia and Nepal and a trade representation in Taiwan. The development is part of an initiative to reform the activities and responsibilities of the European Union's external delegations. |
