Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has picked Sergei Sobyanin, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, to replace the ousted mayor of Moscow, October 2010, further cementing the all-powerful prime minister’s grip on power. Analysts said Mr Sobyanin’s nomination by the president as the replacement illustrated the continued ascendancy of Mr Putin in the run-up to 2012 presidential elections, in which the Prime Minister has hinted he may return to the Kremlin as President. |
