Alvaro de Soto, United Nations Special Envoy, returned to Nicosia (Cyprus) on 13 January 2003 to begin another round of talks with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders on a new UN plan to reunify Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, faces mounting grassroots pressure to make a deal. The UN has set a deadline of 28 February 2003 for securing an outline agreement that would allow both parts of the island to join the European Union in 2004. |
