Further to the decision of the European Parliament of 6 November 2003, a Temporary Committee on improving safety at sea (MARE) has been established, with a mandate to:

(a) examine in detail maritime disasters, in particular the Prestige, the Erika and other recent accidents and incidents;
(b) further analyse the social and economic consequences of maritime disasters, with regard in particular to fisheries, industry and tourism, as well as the environment and health;
(c) assess maritime safety standards more generally and the application of these standards by the Member States in Under compliance with EU and international law;
(d) seek to ensure implementation of the recommendations contained in the EP resolution of 23 September 2003;
(e) propose additional measures which are found to be necessary.

The MARE Temporary Committee will draft a final report of its findings, containing a full assessment of the present situation, in accordance with the mandate. This report will be submitted to a vote by the European Parliament at its Plenary Session in April 2004.
