The European Commission is calling on Member States, the professions and their regulatory bodies to reform or eliminate price-fixing and other restrictions which prevent competition between, among others, lawyers and architects unless clearly justified by public interest considerations. In a report on Competition in Professional Services, adopted on 9 February 2004, the Commission concludes that most restrictions are best dealt with at national level, as they are mostly national in scope. This is also in line with the decentralised enforcement of the EU competition rules from the 1st of May. The Commission will monitor , efforts by national antitrust bodies in the European Competition Network but will also continue tackling violations where this cannot be achieved at national level. |
